A friend recently told me about this thing called Human Design, which is similar to a Myers Briggs or Enneagram psychological model to better understand our unique types of personality traits and I wanted to share it with you with the intention that it might be helpful.

Imagine being given a “user manual” for your life.

As someone who strives to constantly learn more about the topics that interest me and being a person who desires to grow right alongside the succulents that I have come to propagate on my kitchen window sill, I have learned to embrace the benefit of psychological models that further shine a light on those aspects of myself that I am still learning about. That is why when a friend recently told me about Human Design I quickly became enamored by the usefulness of this shiny new tool in front of me that has helped me to realize more about what it is that makes me tick, much like the time when I discovered the insights that came after picking up the book The Wisdom of the Enneagram: The Complete Guide to Psychological and Spiritual Growth for the Nine Personality Types while thumbing through the dusty metaphysical book collection in the library at Spirit Rock Meditation Center.

In Human Design, it is important for you to recognize the “signposts” or clues that you are either on or off your path to fulfillment.

A bit about Human Design

According to the first and official site of the work of the founder of The Human Design System, Ra Uru Hu: “The Human Design System is a synthesis of ancient and modern sciences, and has proven to be a valuable tool for human understanding. With Human Design you discover what makes you different from everyone else. It offers profound insights into your psychology, along with strategies and techniques for making correct decisions and ultimately leading to a life of more ease and fulfillment.”

“You have the innate ability to make choices that are in alignment with your authentic nature, and based in your personal Authority; this knowledge will empower you to live a fulfilling life in your unique way.”

What is human design

During a time in our society that seems to homogenize how we look, what we watch, how we move, and how we think and speak, this a priori understanding of differentiation hits home with me in a big way as I wonder what happened in a city that was once filled with creators and artisans. Mega corporations have reformed a city that was once home to those who thought differently and now if someone believes something apart from the leaders of the company or the more boisterous social narrative they are often quickly banished. Anyways, I am grateful to have spent 7 years in San Francisco and have learned and experienced more than I could have ever imagined.

A bit about my unique Human Design

This website called Living from Your Essence is very helpful to learn more about each Human Design type and after I took a free online test I found out more about being a “Projector” as it is called and wanted to share my main 4 take aways from my particular model.

  1. The key for a Projector to find success in life is to have a mastery of a system. It makes a lot of sense now about about why I have always put so much weight into the different dynamics that are tied to authority after learning that I am supposed to lead and guide, all the while feeling this up hill push when I am not in a position of authority or feel that I am not as well versed in my area of profession as I should be.
  2. Projector energy must be properly managed.  Although I can be extremely productive and energized over a short period of time I must be aware that many people within this category are often thought of as lazy because “a regular Monday through Friday, eight-to-five job is exhausting for a Projector and most Projectors, when faced with only those work options will eventually feel deeply bitter.  Projectors are often out of touch with knowing when enough is enough! Because working hard and putting in long hours every day don’t work for the Projector, learning how to leverage their energy is important.  Unlike Generators, they cannot be “on” all the time. Projectors usually burn out completely at 40 if they are minding a corporate schedule. Therefore, the Projector’s way of creating has to be very intentional. One of the keys to sustaining your energy as a Projector is to leverage the knowledge by mastering a system, i.e., become a specialist. You will benefit by having specific tools through which you offer guidance and direction.  As a Projector, you also need time alone and lots of breaks. After being around others, it is important for you discharge that energy and get back into your own auric field. “
  3. I must be patient and manage my time and connections as society tells Projectors they can’t just sit there and wait. They have to go out and go for it.  But Projectors have no energy to the Throat, so they can’t initiate. And they will not be heard if they offer their insights before they’re asked. They cannot artificially stimulate an invitation. That is why you struggle.  You have no sacral energy.  There’s nothing for you to respond with and nothing for others to respond to in you.  Before you despair, keep in mind that you as a Projector are not here for everyone. You might know how to help everyone, but  you are here only for a specific group of people.  They will recognize you and invite you into sharing your wisdom with them.  Your people will recognize you by your aura.  That is how the Projector gets invited to the big things.  But you have to wait.  While you’re waiting, follow your bliss.  Study what intrigues you. You are adding knowledge to your toolbox and getting ready for your next invitation. If you are living your life in integrity – that is, you are making choices that consciously support your well-being at all levels – you will eventually come out on top!  You will not miss the invitations that are meant for you. The truth about invitations is that, the more you are being yourself, the more others will recognize you and from that, the invitations that are right for you will find you.
  4. The not-self emotional theme for the Projector is bitterness. Bitterness is very repulsive energy.  Nothing pushes an invitation away faster than bitterness. It’s not a Projector world. Projectors cannot manifest their destiny.  A Projector cannot just go do it.  They must wait to offer their wisdom to those who ask for it.  Otherwise, they will not be heard and they will be rejected. In the short run Projectors can work very, very hard with few results.  While you’re waiting for the invitation, focus on your gifts, not your problems. Focus on what you are grateful for.

So knowing these things, what can I do? Motivated by pleasure, it’s the driving force for the enjoyment of life through the senses, whether it’s auditory, through taste, touch, or sight. Opening your sacral chakra allows you to “feel” the world around and in us. As such, it’s an important chakra at the foundation of our feeling of well-being. The second chakra is instrumental in developing flexibility in our life. Associated with the water element, it’s characterized by movement and flow in our emotions and thoughts. It supports personal expansion and the formation of identity through relating to others and to the world. Use the chair pose in yoga to open this up.

Whatever you’re drawn to doing, whatever compels and calls out to you, is what you need to explore.
